My husband and I attended the Calmbirth weekend classes when I was 37 weeks pregnant. I was unsure at first if it would be worth going when I was so late in my pregnancy, but oh was it worth it! We thoroughly enjoyed the classes and it just opened up our eyes to what a birth should be like!
Being my first pregnancy, my husband and I didn't know what to expect of the labour before going to the Calmbirth classes, except extreme pain. After going we felt confident, empowered and encouraged to know that we could get through the labour, and not just get through it, but make it a positive and memorable experience!
I was 39 weeks and 5 days when I gave birth to our beautiful boy, Amias. The labour was about 43 hours long from the beginning of contractions to when Amias was born but the active stage only lasted about 7 hours and the pushing stage lasted 45 minutes. My two midwives and even my mum and mum-in-law (who were both present at the birth) were amazed at how calm and relaxed I wasbut they were also surprised at how fast the labour went considering this was my first child and also because my little man was in posterior position. They both said to me that my labour was like a "textbook" birth because everything went how it should have. I trusted and was confident that my body was more than capable of delivering my babyin the safest way possible, and it did!
I am really happy to say that apart from Panadine Forte and some sleeping tablets (for the night before I gave birth), I went completely drug free! And not only that, but I only tore about 1cm internally and didn't need any stitches as well as a slight graze just above the perennium! This was mainly because I pushed when I felt my body was ready to push instead of forcing it. This amazed the midwives as well. I can't explain the amazing feeling I had when Amias came out and was immediately placed on my chest. He was so alert and ever since his birth people have been amazed at how alert and strong he is for a newborn! People were also amazed at how quickly I had recovered and they've all said that I don't look like I'd just given birth. It's almost like people can't believe that a positive birth experience can exist, but it can!
The whole ward of midwives even applauded us when we walked our little one out of the birth suite. It was such a beautiful experience and I would definitely have to say that I couldn't have done it without my amazing husband who reminded me to relax and breathe through each contraction and was there for me for the whole labour.
So thank you thank you thank you!!!! We will definitely continue to recommend Calmbirth to everyone we know!
